I tried this coconut Nigori Sake at Tajima Itzakaya, It's sweet and full of coconut flavor and relatively low in alcohol content (10% ABV) I think it would be great to cook with so let's see where it ends up-I'm thinking in some sorbets and various desserts.

I'm happy to announce I'm putting on the first of hopefully many, cooking classes for kids and kids at heart who want to learn how to make farm to table healthy and delicious kid friendly dishes at home. Our first class will take place on May 19th, 2018. We're going to be teaching some basic knife skills, (yes kids and and should learn how to properly use knives) and some basic techniques so kids and adults can make quick and easy dishes at home. We're going to be fruit and vegetable focused and we will be certain to keep a sharp eye on your weekly food budget. Every kid will be taking home recipes and something special to help him or her continue to cook at home. After every class I'm asking every kid to make a dish and send me a picture or video of what they made for their families and we'll choose the best one and award a special prize. We'll have a series of classes so you'll learn how to make breakfast/brunch, lunch, and dinner items. For more information contact me through here or send me an email: stephen@thriveandime.com. We'll be posting more info here as well as the date gets closer space is limited as I want these classes to be all hands on deck and fun for all.
We found this late night spot near the Balboa Theater in the Gaslamp district. Sultan Baklava is a family run Mediterranean restaurant that features kababs and other traditional Turkish dishes. Nothing is better than a fresh baklava and Turkish tea or Turkish Coffee if you're in need of a lite night caffeine injection. Everything that we saw coming out of the kitchen looked delicious and we'll be back to sample some of their grilled dishes. Sultan Baklava Mediterraenan Cuisine 770 4th Ave. San Diego 92101 www.sultanbalkava.com Baklava! Everyone loves Baklava and there are many different types of Baklava. We found this late night spot downtown in the heart of the Gaslamp district. They also have a full menu that includes kababs and Turkish flat breads. Everything we saw looked delicious and we'll be back to try their grilled items. If you haven't tried Turkish tea and Turkish coffee, you'll have to try it soon! These fresh Sea Urchins filled with spicy poke and shoyu poke were made by Chef Maui and his wife Jenn @ Island Life Foods. (www.ilnlyffoods.com) You can find them at various farmer's markets around San Diego. They bring authentic island foods to us mainlanders here in San Diego. These sea urchins were just caught this morning. This was the first time my friend Jean had ever had sea urchin and this one was so fresh it was still moving.
Sushi Mori La Jolla is a stone's throw away from La Jolla Shores Beach. Nestled between a fast and casual Mexican restaurant and an Italian restaurant, Sushi Mori serves more than sushi. They have a full Japanese menu with Ramen, Teriyaki, Yakisoba and appetizers and entree salads so there's something for everyone on the menu. The sushi bar features a number of special rolls that are carb free (no rice) for a healthier alternative to the traditional sushi.
Menya Ramen is the 4 time winner of the Tokyo Ramen Show. They have 9 stores in Japan and 2 in Taiwan and San Diego is where they chose to open their first Store in the U.S. You might not know it but there are many different types and styles of ramen but the foundation of all ramen is the insanely flavorful broth. Menya features Tonkotsu Ramen which is a rich, pork bone broth based ramen. They also make their own noodles in house with lye (alkaline) water and with wheat imported directly from Hokkaido. It takes a minimum of 3 days to make the ramen broth and also a minimum of 3 days to make fresh ramen noodles as they have to let the ramen noodles rest for 2 days, 1 day after the dough is mixed to let the gluten combine and make the noodles smooth, and 1 day after the noodles are cut to let them dry a bit to provide that special texture. Be prepared to wait in line for up to 90 minutes. They make everything fresh daily so they can run out of both broth and ramen so go early and go often. So far this is the best bowl of ramen I've eaten in San Diego. Now that artisan ramen is hipster there are many ramen choices available in San Diego. They also have Daiso in the same shopping center to you can also stock up on your favorite Japanese items while you wait for your seat at Menya.
